What would happen if hydrochloric acid came in contact with a metal such as magnesium?

Magnesium is in group 2,the alkaline earth metals. These react vigorously with aqueous acids, giving off hydrogen gas to form a salt. The reason for this is that they are highly electropositive,i.e., they lose electrons easily. Group 1 metals are even more electropositive, tending towards violent reactions.
