How come Ellen is so popular if so many people are against s??

I think she's done a great job. She came out, struggled with her career a bit and then has found her stride in her new show. Rosie was a huge success at her show too, but anyway Ellen has become very popular and I think how can this be if America is so phobic? Don't they hate her for being ? How about all those soccer moms in Iowa and Utah who watch her? Don't they care? I am myself and think Ellen is great...although sometimes I think she isn't as funny as people think she is.
