Stopping overnight in the middle of a train journey?

I have a ticket to go from Glasgow Central to Sheffield. It is a return that expires on the 19th. I'm leaving tomorrow but I wish to stop overnight in Newcastle mid-journey to see my girlfriend. Can I do this, or will a big bad conductor say that my ticket has already been used if I try to get back through the barriers the next day?
