Which is the primary goal of Christianity?

From my own reading of the New Testament, it SHOULD be option 2. From my personal observation, option 1 seems to be the more frequently pushed by Christian conservatives; they generally begin with threats of ultimate punishment, then move onto the enticements of promised reward, and only later move on to option 2 (while regularly underlining that a failure to follow option 2 will result in the worst parts of option 1).
