Why didn't these people fulfill the Islamic prophecy of Mahdi?

Actually the Mehdi stuff is mainly concerned with the Shite branch of Islam. Most Muslims believe that Prophet Jesus (A.S.) will come, slay the Anti-Christ (Dajjal, NOT a donkey), live his life normally and then die just like the rest of us.
